Lunch talk in Montreal

ICS Canada held a lunch talk in Montreal on October 17th 2018. The presentation was entitled “My Japanese Shipbuilding Adventure” and was presented by Courtney Legault, Arctic Operations & Projects Coordinator at Fednav International Limited.

In her talk, Courtney shared her experience overseeing bulkcarrier newbuilding construction at a Japanese shipyard. She took us through the various stages of building from steel blasting, priming and cutting to sub-assembly to commissioning of machinery, sea trial and delivery. Between stages, we were treated to numerous “culture breaks” where Courtney would describe various social events she attended and wonderfully exotic food and drink she was able to enjoy!

The presentation was very well attended and included great representation from ship operator York Overseas, grain trader Agrohall, shipbrokers Summit Maritime and maritime lawyers Brisset Bishop, DMSP Law and DeMan Pillet. By the end of the talk, we all had a better sense not only of the amazing business and engineering work involved in shipbuilding but also the essential human and cultural interaction behind it.

Thanks so much to everyone for making the event a success and as always, our appreciation to the Shipping Federation of Canada for allowing us to use their boardroom!
